KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We worked with RWTD on a six-camera production for TechnologyOne’s CKO Showcase.
  • URSA Pro cameras with optical low pass filters helped keep moiré off the fine-pitch LED screens on camera.
  • Two switching systems cut one mix for the screens in the room and a separate one for the livestream.

SUMMARY

GREAT ON STAGE. GREAT ON CAMERA, TOO

For TechnologyOne’s CKO Showcase, we worked with RWTD to film a stage built around high pixel-density LED screens, with our cameras feeding both the screens in the room and a separate livestream.

The LED looked brilliant to the people in the seats. Our job was to make sure it looked just as good once a camera was pointed at it.

‍

KEEPING MOIRÉ OFF THE SCREENS

Point a camera at a fine-pitch LED wall and you can get moiré, a shimmering pattern that crawls across the picture. When that camera feed goes straight back up on the big screens, everyone in the room sees it.

Our Blackmagic URSA Pro cameras are fitted with optical low pass filters, which help reduce that effect before it reaches the picture. The presenters stayed the focus, not the screens behind them.

‍

SIX CAMERAS, EACH WITH A JOB TO DO

Two cameras on box lenses covered the stage from front of house. A PTZ mounted on the truss held the big wide, and a second PTZ sat low on the stage looking back the other way.

A roaming camera moved between the audience and the stage, while a camera at the front of the stage picked up the close-ups. Between them, the coverage could go from the detail of a presentation to the size of the room without anyone changing position.

‍

TWO AUDIENCES, TWO MIXES

Someone in the venue already has the whole stage in front of them. Someone watching online only sees what we choose to show them, so giving both the same cut wouldn’t do either of them any favours.

We ran two switching systems. One built the mix for the screens in the room, the other cut a separate programme for the livestream, and the event was recorded alongside both.

‍

THE RESULT

One six-camera setup, two mixes made for the way each audience was watching, and an LED stage that held up on camera.

A lot happening behind the scenes, so the people out front could get on with the show.
