Carl Barron's - 'Just Wondering Why' Tour

Summary

TWO NIGHTS. TWO CAMERAS. ONE VERY FUNNY MAN.

We joined the crew at Brisbane Entertainment Centre for two nights of Carl Barron’s Just Wondering Why tour, providing the local camera team and equipment for the Brisbane shows.

And when the person on stage can get a laugh with little more than a look, you want to make sure you catch it.

Working from front of house (FOH), we ran two camera chains side-by-side around 50 metres from the stage - one holding the wider, full-body shot and the other getting in tight for the expressions, reactions and very Carl Barron pauses that make the show what it is.

Two simple angles with two very different jobs.

FROM 50 METRES AWAY, THE LITTLE THINGS STILL MATTER.

Our crew covered both performances across the 19th and 20th of June, with two camera operators and CCU working across the shows.

From our position at FOH, the cameras needed to give the production consistent coverage at both ends of the shot, a solid full-body frame alongside a tight head-and-shoulders option.

It meant whoever was calling the show had both to work with throughout the performance, without needing cameras moving around the room or getting anywhere near the audience's experience.

For a show built around one person on stage, sometimes keeping things simple is exactly the point.

Inverse was brought onto the production as the local Brisbane camera supplier, working alongside the wider team to get the BEC shows covered without bringing the same resources up from Sydney.

That's a big part of what we do.

We can step into an existing production, provide the local crew and kit that's needed, and get on with our part of the job - whether that's two cameras at FOH or a much larger live production.

For Carl Barron, that started with install and technical checks on Friday afternoon, ran through two nights of shows, and wrapped with strike after Saturday's performance.
